Social media is change for the better and here to... →
Social media is the ‘killer app’ that’s driving mobile internet across the world. And yet, certain 21st-century luddites can only see how social media will negatively affect an individual’s interaction and social skills, especially among the young. Vivek Wadhwa, a respected IT industry participant, consultant and academician (i.e. he’s been there, done that!),...

Billionaire eyes Australian media →
Ananda Krishnan has been under the spotlight lately, whether he likes it or not. Last year he took his gaming, entertainment and power conglomerate Tanjong PLC private. This year, his telco Maxis is dragged into India’s 3G spectrum controversy, with authorities seeking co-operation from the telco into investigations on the issue.
The shrewd billionaire has now ventured into the Australian...

How Trujillo met his doom →
Rafael Trujillo was a dictator of the Dominican Republic, who held power from 1930 to 1961. He created a cult of personality in the country, which in testament to his gigantic ego and cojones had the capital renamed from Santo Domingo to Ciudad Trujillo (Trujillo City), created Trujillo province, (now renamed San Cristobal province) and also renamed the nation’s highest peak, Pico Duarte in...

The JPA scholarship conundrum →
Every year, we hear parents and their brilliant and gifted offspring complain about not getting Government scholarships. Some have alleged bias, favouritism and even racism in the selection process. Opaqueness and the lack of transparency in awarding the scholarships, to be sure are factors that lead to this yearly hullaballoo. But perhaps in the age of budgetary deficits, the time has come for...

Egyptian pyramids found by infra-red satellite... →
I am a history freak. When I was small I wanted to be an archaeologist, but my Dad said, “Why? You can’t make decent money out of nosing around some god-forsaken corner of the world?!” So whenever a major archaeological find is announced, till today I would devour every source I could find to know more about it.
These days satellite imagery is increasingly becoming an important...

Yup….Yandex who? But apparently Yandex is looking to raise more than US$1bn by listing on Nasdaq. Yandex started in 1997 (older than Google!) and is the top search engine in Russia with 64% of traffic in the country! Also, it reported US$439m revenue and net profit of US$134m….yes people, that’s about 25% net margin, a very decent return by any standard!

Sweet tooth IPO: Dunkin' Donuts going for listing →
The owner of Dunkin’ Donuts (DD), Dunkin’ Brands also owns Baskin-Robins and has 16,200 outlets worldwide for both brands, which is only 700 less than Starbucks Coffee. This apparently makes it the second-largest coffee chain in the world. But correct me if I’m wrong, I don’t recall Baskin-Robins in Malaysia selling coffee in their menu. Also, DD seems to be lagging...

What if every electric car becomes a mini IPP? →
This article suggests a way on how every electric car can play the part of reserve capacity during power demand spikes, effectively turning them into independent power producers (IPP).The biggest issue would be (of course) the feed-in tariff, i.e. the purchase price of the power generated by the cars. It needs to be low enough for it to be feasible to the energy company but high enough for...
